The New Year offers a chance for a clean slate, a fresh start, and renewal. That’s why millions of people the world over will spend a little time making a list of all the things they want to improve about themselves and their lives in 2013.

Last year, a study showed the top 10 resolutions were:

  1. Lose weight.
  2. Get organised.
  3. Spend less, save more.
  4. Enjoy life more.
  5. Get fit and healthy.
  6. Learn something new.
  7. Quit smoking.
  8. Help others in their dreams.
  9. Fall in love.
  10. Spend more time with family.

That same study goes on to explain that 25 per cent of people give up on their resolution within the first week. Just eight per cent of people are successful in achieving their resolution overall. Depressing, right?

I’m going to tell you a way you can have a better chance of achieving your resolutions for 2013.

Start now.

Let’s talk about the health related resolutions in particular: lose weight, get fit and healthy, and quit smoking. There is absolutely no reason why you can’t take action on these before the year is out. You could literally start today. Start now.

How great would it feel, on New Year’s Day, in your groggy post-party haze, that you have already made tangible steps towards your dreams and goals? Pretty exciting, right?

They don’t have to be big steps. It could be a short daily walk or jog (see #mileaday hashtag on instagram), grabbing some nicotine-replacement therapy from the chemist, incorporating extra fruit and veg into your regular meals. You
could drink more water, swap chocolate bars for chocolate nut balls, or join the gym and get a couple of classes in before the January rush.

Even fun summer activities like swimming, surfing, dancing and enjoying the outdoors contribute to improving your health!

How about incorporating some whole foods into your summer cocktails? This is a fantastic, easy recipe that tastes delicious!

Cheeky Rum Smoothie (serves 2)
Ingredients:
¼ cup white rum
2 cups strawberries (or mango works well)
1 banana
1 cup greek yoghurt
Ice cubes to taste

Method: Just blend and enjoy!
